Who's Lookin'
Hi,
I am a great fan of you microaudio player, because:
1. User is not redirected to a blank page while listening to my music/sounds
2. I love the 1PixelOut design!
Now I have just updated to the newest version 0.2.1 of your microaudio player and it works perfect on Windows XP systems, BUT I am also a Mac user!
On my Mac the audio player plays the mp3 file, but user is redirected to a blank page showing a different slim audio player.
On previous versions – it used to work fine. I have tried to re-install older versions, but without any luck – it shows the 1PixelOut player, but for some reason it will not link to the mp3 files.
So any chance that your player will work on a Mac with the 1PixelOut design?
Hi again,
Just a correction to my previous reply – found out that the 1PixelOut player does not load on Windows XP either. This means that user is redirected to a blank page with an audio player, where the mp3 file is played. My Wordpress version is 2.5
Best regards, Nevin
@Nevin:
Hmm . . . Worked fine for me in OS X 10.4.10 with Firefox 2.0.0.9 and Safari 2.0.4:
Win XP under investigation.
Do you have flash installed on your machines?
Hi again,
I have re-installed the 0.2 version again, which works fine. The problem just occurred when installing the new 0.2.1 version.
And yes, I have Flash and Firefox installed on both my machines.
/Nevin.
Hi There -
Just tried out your plugin and like the idea. One question — you say on the wordpress plugin page that you don’t have the player show up on the page for a couple of reasons including why have it if someone doesn’t want to listen.
Makes sense, but is there any way to have the player autoplay on launch vs. requiring the user to click a second time to listen? That seems to be an unnecessary step since the first click shows they want to hear it.
Thanks!
Greg
@Greg:
The short answer is yes. The next version will include a configuration screen to chooses such options. In the meantime, you can find out more about the player at my post Using the 1PixelOut Player: Settings and manually edit the player flashVars to your liking.
@all:
A new version (0.3) is out which should address all known bugs and also provide a settings screen (at “Settings > µAudio”) for all available features.
Wow – nice to see it available so quickly. I downloaded the new version — autoplay works great but when using the Autoconfig option it stopped working. Leave it unchecked and it’s fine. I’m using World Press 2.3.3.
Honestly the auto-play was the main function I desired so I’m still happy.
Thanks so much!
Greg
@Greg: @all:
Auto-configuration still needs a little work. In particular, it is only reliable with WordPress 2.5 and k2 or kubrick. I needed to hurry up the 0.3 release to address the issues with certain browsers, and I did a quick clean up of auto-configuration. If you have substantially different class names (in the CSS) than the ones in the default theme, auto-configuration will fail to provide useful colors, as it has CSS class names hard coded. That’s why it’s turned off by default in this release.
The next release will include an interactive color chooser in the settings screen. In the long run, I suspect that this will be of more use. In the meantime, to see the auto-configuration in action, hit up my testing site at http://disas.terlicio.us/
First, thank you very much for the excellent plugin. I would however, like to drop you a note with an issue that’s been reported by my readers. Apparently, the player does not work at all with Firefox 3 Beta 5, at least on my site and your test site. This wouldn’t be an issue, but enough of the code fires to not allow direct download of the music either.
Again, thanks a lot for the plugin.
@B Watson:
Thanks for the heads up. I am working on a new version that eschews browser detection completely, and should run with Firefox 3.
Please be aware that my test site may sometimes have a different version of the code than the stable release, and therefore not run even when the stable release runs.
I love the plugin, however, when jQuery is enabled my lightview plugin does not work.
Dont work with Firefox 3.0 RC1
@Johan:
Known issue, in progress.
@all:
Updates will resume later this week. I’m in the middle of semester finals right now, and haven’t had a lot of time for programming.
Would be great to make it work in mu-plugin (wpmu name for the plugin directory for a blog farm
Any news on when you might be able to update for compatibility with Firefox 3? I love the plugin and can’t wait to use it.
r
hi,
thanx a lot for this terrific plugin !
When do you manage to publish the new release working on firefox 3 ?
kind regards,
PoL
@enseignement:
I actually run a µ site. I’m working on making profiles compatible, but it’s a level 2 priority, probably several weeks off.
@rhowell:
I know that Firefox 3 is now “out”. I plan to have a ‘quickfix’ out today or tomorrow, which will just disable the troublesome animation in Firefox 3.
A more thorough fix is in the works, but will be rolled out with the new features in the next version.
@Nioumane:
See above
@all:
I know I haven’t responded to messages or made updates for a week or two. I’ve moved to Seattle, and am doing somewhat different work, and between the two haven’t had much time for these projects. I do plan to continue supporting them and release new version soon.
Hi Christopher,
Thanks for what sounds like a great plugin.
I have one important question… perhaps I am missing something, but it is not obvious to me HOW this plugin actually operates.
I have installed it. But then what? How does it function?
I thought perhaps it was one that auto detects an MP3 file link in a post and then displays a player, but that does not occur. I am on FF 3.0.1 and I see some comments from people saying it does not work on 3.x. Is that the issue here?
If you have not already, I highly recommend you describe the expected functionality of this plugin in your product description.
With my regards,
Jonathan
@Jonathan:
The idea behind µAudio was that it is “zero config”. Once you install it, stuff “just happens”.
Obviously, this bug has put paid to that. I will endeavor to include further documentation in subsequent releases.
Now all I need to do is get the javascript sorted out (argh!)
It isn’t working for me under FF3, Flock, or Opera on Ubuntu 8.04
see http://contimedia.us/music/?page_id=24
damn, that is so nice in IE7, but such crap (not working) in Firefox, this would be my all time favorite light audio player if it would work in FF. any updates?
@all:
0.5 out.
All known bugs fixed (or at least replaced with a nice error message)
@oneaustin:
See above.
@wpj:
See Above.
you rock, works great now in firefox 3 and IE7…thanks for the great plugin!
hi. Thanks for plugin
perfect.
Best Regards
@wpj, @baron:
Thanks a lot, I’m glad you like it.
I’m not able to get it to work. I’ve used ie 7, firefox 3, and tried it in Chrome as well. Just links to the mp3 like normal. I’m using wordpress version 2.6.2
http://www.franklinfamily.org/2008/10/09/ambrose-trying-to-walk-the-audio-version/
Tried all kinds of things. Seems to be installed fine and compatible on my plugins page.
@Jayson:
I’ve had several reports of people having trouble, it seems to be related to other plugins on the site. I’m investigating.
µAudio does not take the shortcut of using the $ shortcode for jQuery, but I still seem to be having some trouble with some libraries.
Is it possible to change the variables so that there’s no clicking the link needed? But instead the little player skin is just there and visible in the post at all times? Please advise.
@Justin:
You want the Audio Player plugin. That’s the whole difference between the two.
Hey – very nice! I like how tidy it is…
I am interested in making it autoplay and perhaps in using the sidebar widget, but when I go to the config page, I have no option to “Update” once I check those boxes.
Can you tell me where I can change it to default to checked? Or perhaps what’s going on with the config page?
If I’m not communicating the problem well, I have a screenprint of the config page, or I can send you the php code (though I didn’t change it after downloading).
This plugin is exactly what my client was looking for – thanks!
Quick question though – is there a way to make the player left aligned? Mine appears to have a left margin or something. I’m guessing there’s something in the .php or .js file I need to edit?
Thanks for your help!
@JC:
Take a look at the page with firebug, the plugin adds a class to the div containing the player. Simply add some CSS.
I installed v.5 and it was working for a couple weeks like a beauty on my wordpress self-hosted site. Then all of a sudden it stopped working. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed twice and still the player will not display.
@Mike:
Did you a) Install any new plugins b) Install any new themes, or c) change your wordpress version?
Telling me what/if you changed any settings is really helpful to troubleshooting.
~ Christopher
I too am having the same problem as the last poster. I have had your plugin installed for a few weeks and now the links just want to download. No player pops up anymore. I haven’t added anything new to the site and actually had the guy I created the site email me to tell me it wasn’t working any longer. The site is thehotseats.net under the Album section.
Thanks
@Charles ODonovan:
I just tried out your installtion and it worked fine for me (Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows Vista SP1).
Did you change anything to get it working?
@Christopher O’Connell
I just upgraded to WP 2.7 today. Still not working. Using both IE 7 and Chrome 1.01. Haven’t installed any new plugins.
Fantastic player just what I needed for my daughters blog. However when clicking on the link (an image in this case) from within the post and not the excerpt on the homepage it asks to save the file rather than play it..?
Check the site for an example.
Any ideas on why this is.
Thanks.
Plugin working fine on wp 2.7 but only when I use the option ‘Include jQuery on the display pages’. But then the lightbox 2 plugin doesn’t work anymore, when I disable jQuery lightbox works fine but obviously uAudio doesn’t.
Is there a small workaround for this?
In reply to my previous post, I have installed the newer version and all is working fine, the fact you can change all the colours too is GREAT!!
Hmmm,
http://compu.terlicio.us/code/plugins/audio/ still ver 0.5
@Roland:
Fixed. The new version runs jQuery in the most aggressive no conflict mode. It should work just about anywhere.
@Raffaell:
Nice catch, seems I forgot to actually hit “Update”. It should be good to go now, though.
Thanks! New version is working great, css styling is also cool however I can’t manage to to style the ‘rightbghover’ ‘loader’ and ‘tracker’. I think something is wrong in microAudio.js but I can’t seem to figure this out
Great plugin. Thanx!
A microFLV plugin would be nice
Nice plugin however (and I hate to come and pick a hole in a lovely script) the current code as it is tends to break XHTML validation as you use & and not & in the microAudio.php file.
I’ve listed the relevent lines to fix on my site if anyone needs to change them to get their validation correct
You can find the ammended lines in this post.
Hopefully someone will find that helpful
Thanks again for the plugin!
@Alex Smith:
Arrgh!! I even meant to fix this, and yet it seems I forgot. It’ll be in a 0.6.1 release.
@Roland:
Looking into it.
@jim:
You mean a similar plugin, but for flv files?
@all:
I’ll be adding this to the documentation soon. In the meantime, you can view the bugtracker, submit new bugs and submit feature requests at http://redmine.paintedrockcommunications.com/. To submit bugs/features, create a free account there.

I’m new at this web. sight building. I want to ad music to my sight, but I’m having trouble. I download your media player and activated it. But nothing come up on my dashbaord to work with it. I used a weggit to get a screen on my pages, but nothing happens when I click it. What am I doing wrong? How do I resolve this problem. Hope you can help. Thanks, Michael
The plugin works great, except it does not pass XHTML validation. I changed all instances of & to & and it works fine now. ease update to fix this bug.
i had install your plugin,but how that plugin know to play mp3 files?
Hi, i search everywhere and nothing about how i could use this plugin !
Great plug-in. One issue… is there a way to limit how far the player extends when playing? It extends past the edge of the page.
http://dodgecityraceway.msidigitalmedia.com/
Player upgraded to v.06, but still not working in Firefox 2.x Win.
(the slidedown of below-content works, but no player appears)
Did work in IE 7, Firefox 3.x
Upgraded to latest flash, no avail. WP is 2.6.5 (not ready to spring 2.7 admin on client)
Help? Known Issue? Please advise.
@Michael Overholt:
@vion:
@CB:
There is a settings page called µAudio. Other than that, there’s nothing special, it just finds links to mp3 files. No messy tags required.
Simply create a link whose href is an mp3 file. That’s it.
@Mike N:
The player expands to fill the container alloted to it. In most themes, this is not an issue, however, you can manually style the div the player appears in.
@Michael Truese:
I’m a little reluctant to call this a known issue, but, I’ve looked at several installations where the plr.swf file had not transfered correctly, make sure that you can visit WP-ROOT/wp-content/plugins/microaudio/plr.swf . If you don’t see the default player when you visit that link, then that explains why the player doesn’t appear.
Thanks Christopher O’Connell works fine now !
Hi,
I have just installed the µAudio plugin on a new site I’m working on (wp 2.7). The “in-post” player is perfect, no problems with it, but I can’t get the widget to work. The player shows in the sidebar, but it’s empty with no songs. How do I get it to play the songs I have on the site?
Knut
Another thing: If I have several mp3s listed on a page, is it possible to have some that are only played as streams, and some that are allowed as downloads? As it is now, I have to either have ALL songs streamed only or all songs for download. Is there a way to change this?
Excellent plugin! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to next release.
Hi,
So I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong or not doing. I downloaded the plug in, activated it and then put a link to an mp3 in a post but nothing’s happening except its taking me to that page where the file is. I uploaded the file through wordpress so the address is : http://www.stephenpickering.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/01-inanna.mp3
Is that my problem? Should I have just uploaded the mp3 to the root folder?
Thanks,
Stephen Pickering
Great plugin. Is there a way to change the initial volume setting?
Christopher…thank you for the plugin. I apologize, but I can’t figure out what I’ve done wrong. Should it work if I link to an mp3 file that’s not on my domain? Here’s an example…
http://tiny.pl/b942
@Kurt Greenbaum:
It should work cross domain, the most common error I’ve seen recently is themes that do not correctly include the javascript in the header.
@Rych:
Not at the moment. If you want to add a feature request go to http://redmine.paintedrockcommunications.com/
@Stephen Pickering:
As we discussed via e-mail, your theme was not loading the javascript files.
Hi Christopher,
Still fan of your audio player – it rocks!
BUT I had a minor issue with the latest 0.6 version on my Mac (PowerPC). The audio player plays the mp3 file, but user is redirected to a blank page showing a different slim audio player.
On Windows VISTA it worked fine.
I have now reverted to the previous 0.5 version, which works fine on both systems.
Thanks again for a great audio player!
Best regards,
Nevin
@Nevin:
This is actually a major bug, if I may inquire, what version of Mac (10.4, 10.5, etc) and what browser (with version if possible). I had seen this with older versions of Safari occasionally, but I thought I had it solved.
I recently installed the plugin, but have not been able to get it to work. I am using Wordpress 2.7.1, but when i click on the audio link, it just goes to a new page and plays a quicktime audio clip, as if the plugin were not installed. Help?
@Mike:
As discussed on Wordpress.org, this is probably an issue with overly zealous security settings on your host. That having been said, 0.6.2 (due out in the next 24 hours) will fix this.
To that end 0.6.2 is coming out because 1) This problem and 2) Some documentation changes did not get properly committed.
Hi!
I just downloaded your Uaudio plugin version 6.2 and it wouldn’t work for me. I am running a MAC OSX (version 10.4.11) and was viewing the website on Firefox (version 3.0.7) I didn’t try out safari and I can’t stand using it, and what’s the point if it doesn’t work where I wanted it to.
I’ve now rolled back to version 6.0 of your plugin and it works fine. No problems at all.
Thought you might like to know, as your previous comments mention that 6.2 should fix the problems people were having with version 6.1
Thanks for the great plugin.
Hey, I thought microAudio was the PERFECT solution for my web site. Small, clean, simple, and it Just Worked.
On Safari for the Mac.
Then after uploading a zillion MP3s, I decided to test in Firefox for the Mac. Infinite “Buffering…” but no audio.
Found a Windows machine. Infinite “Buffering…”
My audio files are stored in a folder with a simple htaccess file limiting access to links from within my own site. If allow RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$ then microAudio works, but that leaves my content exposed.
I can’t believe all those browsers except Safari are refusing to send REFERER. Any idea what’s going on? Thanks!
I have had this plug-in installed for some 18 months, updating it everytime I notice an update, but it has never worked for me.
I have looked through the posts and tried going directly to “/wp-content/plugins/microaudio/plr.swf” and the player shows up, so that part is ok.
However, the mp3s just play via the balnk page QT browser plugin.
I have tried the latest FF as well as the latest Safari (4beta) but no joy.
My mp3s are normal fully specified href tags, e.g.
link
I tried cutting one down to simply a relative tag, as in, “/audio/chaos/Chaos_8.mp3″
but this made no difference.
From going to the player URL directly I can see that it is there and basically works.
It just seems the plugin is not recognising my links.
Thoughts?
I’m having a problem with degraded audio quality. When the uAudio player plays a file, it sounds terrible, however when I paste the url of the mp3 in the address bar and let quicktime play it, it sounds fine.
I’m running Vista/Firefox 3.0.8
Any ideas?
I found the problem.
The mp3 file I’m using was recorded at a really high level. I tried another audio file and it sounds fine. I guess, for whatever reason, your audio player can’t handle really hot audio files.
Christoper, thx for this usefull plugin.
As Rych mentioned before I am also looking for a way to modify the inital sound volume. I don’t need to set this via Admin, so is there a way to set it on 100% in the files? Perhaps as an flash-variable?
Like a lot of other people my volume sound-settings at my pc are very moderate, so its hard to hear anything with 50% volume-setting.
Thank you again.
Hello Christopher
Great plug-in, but just one question…
Is it possible to display the player when the page loads rather than waiting for a user to click on a link? Has this feature been added?
My only concern is that users may not immediately know that they are able to play these audio files directly from my site.
Thanks
damn .. sorry, but you’re an idiot!
you forgot to add this to your Installation nfo when jQuery is being load “externally”:
Query.noConflict();After that, it works like a breeze
cu, w0lf.
theres a ‘j’ missing in my code snippet.
anyway – its the ‘noConflict()’-part that is missing.
cu, w0lf.
im trying to configure the plugin to hide the original link and display the player on page load, but not play the file on load.
Hi, I like a lot you`r plugin, but I have a question: how I need to do to change the “click me and I will show the player” system?, I mean, the player it`s not showing atomatically, you need to click on the link/song name to show the audio player, and I don`t want that…
I search in the options of the plugin, but I don`t find anything…
Please, help!.
PD: my english sucks, I know it.
And I don`t want to use de “Audio player” plugin (not uAudio player), because it show inmedeatly the player (and that`s what I want) BUT it don`t show the song title…
Fantastic plug-in. Thank you, this is precisely what I was looking for.
@Stephen Fleming:
This is a limitation in flash requesting audio files. To fix this kind of problem I use a php script which manages all of the permissions.
So, my htaccess redirects all incoming requests for the content folder to a php file with the request string as the “request” parameter, and then php takes care of all of the niceties like authentication, and also dynamically offloads onto amazon s3 if the main server is getting too many requests.
@James:
Almost certainly a problem with other JavaScript on your page preventing the JavaScript from working properly. As of 0.6.x it is much, much more robust and I solved all the know interactions. That having been said, please provide a link to your page and I’ll see what other JavaScripts are there.
The other possible problem is that your theme isn’t loading the JavaScript at all. To that end, view source on one of your pages and make sure the microaudio.js.php is being included.
@PaulN:
I’m not sure. There may be a flashvar that can adjust the volume of the player. I’ll look into that. If there is, I’ll make it settable via css.
@Bruce:
One of the easiest ways to deal with this is to add a little icon to the links.
See Mr|Tots. Each audio file has the little icon block around the post. This can also be done dynamically with a tiny bit of javascript. Simply add a jquery selector that find links to mp3s and addClass(“my-audio-links”), where my-audio-links is a css class that contains the distinguishing code.
I’ll add an example of this to the next release.
@fwolf:
No, actually, I didn’t. jQuery runs in its own maximum no conflicted namespace, mAjQ, as there were conflicts with multiple versions of jQuery on the page. But the mAjQ object is no conflicted.
@matt ryan:
So you want the plugin to load but not start playing? Set the “autoplay” option to false on the “Settings > uAudio” tab.
@Criseck:
Use the audio player plugin. Simply edit it so that it passes the title as a flashvar.
Sigh. That’s really not what this player was intended for. How does one handle the conflict if there are multiple audio files on the page? Just play the first one?
I guess I’ll add this as a requested feature, but I’m not entirely sure how it will work.
http://redmine.paintedrockcommunications.com/issues/show/80
As requested, here is a link to a page with audio plugin:
http://www.miracle-studies.net/sound/laws-of-chaos-audio-from-talk/
Viewing the source of the page indicates inclusion of “microaudio.js.php”, in fact these are the only javascripts references on the page period.
So it seems as if the javascript is being called and there is no other javascript present to conflict.
@James:
Visit http://www.miracle-studies.net/wp-content/plugins/microaudio/. Note that there are a number of files displayed in the listing? Now try to visit any file that ends in php: you get a 404 error. This is a long way of saying that while both scripts are included, neither is actually loading (The easy way to see this is to open firebug and hit the “Net” tab).
If you have some sort of htaccess rule that prevents php filee from directly loading out of /wp-content/ you will need to remove it, otherwise I have never seen such an error. I can provide you with a statically configured version of the javascript (with a js extension), but you will be unable to make configuration changes.
I have no idea as to what is going on here. I can’t see anything strange. I will need to investigate.
It’d be excellent if there was a way of somehow not directly linking to the files so that it shows up in the status bar and in the html. Is there any way, maybe already there, that could hide sensitive urls that I want to just play but not reveal.
Thanks,
Ed
@James:
0.7 will fix this problem. It seems that some hosts prevent the loading of *.js.php (I have no idea why though).
Nonetheless, 0.7 will use precompiled JavaScript files for speed, security and maximum interoperability.
@Ed Barton:
Not really, no. The problem is you need some way to add the url to the page and even if it’s hidden somewhere, all the user needs to do it “view source” to get the link.
Probably the easiest way to accomplish some moderate level of protection is to use a download file.
Thus, your links would point to /downloader.php/somefile.mp3. Downloader would then check to make sure that the request originated from your page (via a refferal) and then send the file to the web.
Such a scheme can, of course, be broken, but it would provide some measure of control over your distribution.
any chance of getting ,WAV file support?
@amal:
It’s under consideration.
Excellent. I commonly post WAV file recordings made through my phone. It can also save them in some aweful proprietary standard, but WAV is pretty basic. I’m assuming the flash component can handle it, a chunk of code just has to be added to recognize both the mp3 and wav extensions, correct?
I’ve just upgraded my testsite ( http://greys.gemandsarah.com ) (yes it looks like a shit bomb, but It is a TEST SITE!) to word press 2.8 and now uAudio doesn’t work.
The very first post has an audio link and it just comes up with the download file box when you click it.
Are you going to upgrade uAudio or do you think it would be all the other plugins I have which I’ve had forever with uAudio and worked fine before?
sorry!
Please disregard it works fine. It was my own fault, Firefox gave me a ‘download file’ link when I click ‘copy file location’ sorry!
works a treat. Cheers
Hi Christopher,
Just a single question
How can I make the plug-in visible? Currently it shows as a link on my page and is only visible when I click on it. I have just updated to the newest version.
Best regards,
Nevin
